The Krishna Menon Institute (KMI) to honour high achieving Indian and Diaspora women and men.|
The Kerala based Krishna Menon Institute has announced that its first annual award to honour and individual/ individuals for outstanding achievements in science, literature, human rights, philanthropy, diplomacy and the art will be made in September 2008.
The KMI's objective is to honour and perpetuate the memory of Krishna Menon – a heroic Indian patriot. He was a distinguished intellectual, diplomat and India's Defence Minister. Menon, a post- graduate of the famous London School of Economics (LSE) was a friends and colleague of the legendary Harolds Lasky, one of the giants of democratic socialism.
Menon founded the India League in the UK which acted as the unofficial “embassy” for India in the 1940s. The League had a powerful membership of Diaspora Indian politicians and intellectuals and influential British politicians, academics, intellectuals, writers, and others who strongly supported the demand for Indian independence.
Menon was the first ethnic minority person to be elected councillor for the London Borough of Camden. Shortly after independence Pundit Nehru appointed Krishna Menon India's first High Commissioner in London. Nehru subsequently sent him to the United Nations where he distinguished himself as “this Tremendous Representative”, an honour conferred on him by another towering orator, Molotov, leader of the Soviet delegation.
Nehru, Menon's close friend and intellectual equal, later appointed Menon Defence Minister. Outspoken, principled and a patriot to the bone, Krishna Menon has earned himself a secure place in world and Indian history.
