This Encyclopedia of Kerala's past (heritage and history) and present is the first of its kind. It records the origins, history and culture of this ancient land, one of the world's oldest civilizations.

This is a long overdue record of Kerala history which gives every one access to some of the many fascinating facts that have shaped Kerala, one of the most socially and intellectually developed states in India. As is well known this state enjoys 100% literacy.

It is widely acknowledged that Kerala has produced some of India 's greatest sons in politics, literature, diplomacy, medicine, philosophy etc.

We are in the process of conducting the most intensive research into these and other aspects of a great heritage. We will appreciate contributions on these subjects from academics, journalists, scholars and others.

This is only a start. As the English are fond of saying: ‘from little acorns mighty oaks grow'. We are under no illusion about the enormity of the task we have set ourselves. What is important is that we have started the ball rolling. We expect the first edition of the Encyclopedia to appear in February 2008.

We have an impressive and dedicated team of experts, writers and researchers. They will not only produce original entries to the Encyclopediabut also check all contributions to ensure accuracy. Contributions are welcome in English and Malayalam. Anecdotes and observations are welcome with the proviso that they are subjected to the most rigorous but sympathetic scrutiny.

Please do not feel inhibited. Your contribution may be very interesting and informative. This is the first stage- an appeal for facts, information, anecdotes and observations. We hope to be flooded with these. You will be hearing more from us. Every contribution will be acknowledged. Let us stress we will not get it right at the first attempt but at least we will be able to produce a sizable body of work which will inspire a future generation of scholars to produce the Definitive Encyclopedia of Kerala. This Encyclopediais being produced under the aegis of the V K Krishna Menon Institute ( Kerala , India ).
